A PHD POSITION IS AVAILABLE ASSOCIATED TO THE PROJECT
“Acculturation and linguistic acculturation of the descendants of migrants. Challenges and opportunities for language learning and linguistic and socio-educational inclusion (PAALDESMI)”
The summary of the project is:
One of the greatest challenges faced by the Spanish society in general, and the Catalan in particular, refers to the incorporation of the descendants of immigrants in equal conditions.
This circumstance acquires a singular relevance if we try to avoid, from the beginning of schooling, the emergence of segregated and/or marginalized acculturation profiles, which tend to lead to conflicts of coexistence such as those experienced in neighboring countries.
In this regard, the Theory of Acculturation postulates that these young people construct different profiles depending on the maintenance of their culture and identity and the incorporation of those belonging to the majority group(s). Profiles that tend to produce psychosocial and educational adjustments that can be more or less satisfactory. However, when we refer to bilingual social contexts, in addition to the usual configurations of cultural identity acculturation, it is absolutely essential to pay specific attention to linguistic acculturation patterns. Undoubtedly, the role of the Education System is crucial both in the formation of the aforementioned profiles and in the consequences of an academic performance that will be mediated by linguistic success and linguistic and socio-educational inclusion.
With this background, we focus on Catalonia, and on the particular case of the descendants of Romanians and Moroccans who are in the last stage of compulsory secondary education.
Thus, the aim of the project is to analyze their patterns of acculturation and linguistic acculturation, and the interrelation that is established with linguistic performance and the degree of linguistic and socio-educational inclusion.
Methodologically, we will combine quantitative and qualitative social research techniques, with the aim of obtaining more profound and reliable data about our object of study. The expected results of the research should generate scientific knowledge on the base of which to propose didactic and socio-educational measures in order to optimize the language learning and the social and educational inclusion of these young people.
