The Network to Promote Linguistic Diversity -together with the Centre Maurits Coppieters– will organize a High Level Conference titled “The Current Challenges for minority languages in today’s complex societies” in November 9th, in the Thon Hotel Brussels City Centre (Brussels).
The event will gather the main stakeholders -mainly Director-generals for Language Policy in the different regions within the NPLD- as well as representatives from the different European institutions.
The core idea is to identify those elements around which public policy intervention is needed in order to ensure that a minority language is revitalized and that their speakers use is on a daily basis and also that European institutions are aware so as to take more into account smaller languages in their policy planning. These elements will revolver around three broad ideas, which are hot topics in the current European debates: the challenge of migration and mobility in minority languages, the role of languages as catalyzers for the economy and languages and education (see full program attached).
The conference is open to all NPLD members as well as to the wider audience so as to make sure it has an impact not only within the NPLD members but also to other relevant stakeholders. The ultimate goal is to place the debates on regional languages in the European agenda as well as on wider debates on mobility, education and economy, in which nations must play a determinant role.
