Abstract: The text provides an overview of the current reality of the Catalan language with a brief historical reference. During the post-Franco transition and Spain’s accession to the European Communities it seemed possible to reach an egalitarian multilingualism, which reflects the Universal Declaration of Linguistic Rights (Barcelona, 1996). At the beginning of the XXI century this hope is focused on the draft Statute of Autonomy of 2005. Its rejection by a judgment of 2010 of the Constitutional Court questioned the possibility of an equal status without political independence.
